1.6 million injuries related to basketball were medically treated last year in the US alone. The AAOS is publishing its 'Top Ten' list of summertime sports most likely to cause injuries. Basketball tops that list, with cycling coming in a close second. According to 1999 statistics from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, bicycle-related accidents were linked to nearly 1.5 million trips to US emergency departments and clinics last year. Baseball ranked third with almost 500,000 injuries reported. Soccer came in the fourth sport with 480,000 injuries. Softball was fifth with 406,000 bumps. The sixth through tenth most dangerous sports are trampoline use (247,000), inline skating (234,000), horseback riding (196,000), weightlifting (190,000), and volleyball (187,000). All in all recreational sports racked up $84.7 billion last year in medical expenses repairing injuries.
