New study by researcher at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota chewing gum
raises your metabolic rate by 20%, and those that chew sugar-free gun all
day can burn off 11 pounds of extra weight each year.
Subjects were monitored by a machine that
uses the content of exhaled air to measure how much energy the body is
consuming.
During a 30-minute rest period, the
researchers calculated that the test subjects were consuming 58
kilocalories per hour.
When each subject chewed sugar-free gum at
100 chews per minute for 12 minutes, the rate increased dramatically to 70
kilocalories per hour. A metronome was used to keep a steady chewing pace.
The effect of chewing gum on weight
control, they said, "should not be discounted."
But they noted that a person would have to
chew every waking hour for one year to lose 11 pounds. However, in this
day and age every little bit helps.
