A typical day's eating would consist of an egg white omelet for breakfast, turkey or chicken and salad for lunch and fish or chicken and salad for dinner. I never eat sweets or touch alcohol, I train hard but I just can't make any further progress. Help! What more must I do?

10/10/2007Do simple sugars cause gains in body fat?

10/8/2007Starbucks recently caved into several activist groups and no longer serve milk from cows injected with growth hormone. I wanted to know if you knew of any research that supports this concern and if it is worth avoiding this type of milk?

10/5/2007Hi Paul, we're looking to update our performance testing criteria prior to next year's football season. I know you're always up to date on this stuff. Anything new I can implement in our performance assessments aside from the traditional straight-line 10 yard sprint?

9/5/2007I've heard that glutamine might help with fat loss, is this true?

9/3/2007I'm slightly confused about your creatine cycling strategy. I use VP2 and HSC before and after every workout as per your supplement-timing article. However, should I use Creatine HSC all the time during my days on creatine as per your creatine cycling strategy? How can I implement creatine cycling and supplement-timing easily into my program?

9/1/2007I'm training twice day, morning and night. I wanted to know if incorporating a midday nap into my schedule would help with my recovery?

8/30/2007My brother, who is a really good bodybuilder, started taking growth hormone last year. The problem is, I could swear that over the last six months, his face has changed and not for the better. I think his head has grown! The size and shape of his forehead has definitely changed. It's freaking me out! Could the GH be a catalyst of this?

8/28/2007Now I understand what you've said about trying to live, work and train intensely on a low-carb diet. You just can't do it. However, when ever I've started one of these diets, I get an uncanny feeling of euphoria or a natural high. Then of course, after a few weeks my energy levels and workout intensity plummets. I crash and burn. Can you explain this euphoric feeling people can get from those absurd low-carb diets?

8/26/2007My mom's physician has just advised her she needs to lose weight. He's recommended drugs such as orlistat, sibutramine and a new one called rimonabant to help. 8/22/2007Paul, what is your opinion on working chest and back on the same day?

8/20/2007Caffeine is thought to increase performance by increasing adrenaline (catecholamine) release. However, increasing catecholamine release stimulates greater free radical production which damages cells and (as you've said) may cause premature ageing. What are your thoughts on this, and do you think caffeine consumption should be limited for this reason?

8/18/2007I've read about the merits of using unstable surfaces when weight training. My question is, should I perform my exercises such as squats and deadlifts while standing on an unstable surface?

8/16/2007As a trainer, I've noticed that muscle growth responses between younger and older adults are very different. For instance, my older clients respond much more slowly whereas my younger clients (people in there 20 and 30's) respond quite dramatically to the stimuli of weight training. Is there any research on this Paul? Thanks.

8/14/2007Paul, I've been an athlete and competitive powerlifter for almost 20 years now. I love the Max-OT program and have completed several training cycles in the past, always with great gains. The biggest problem I have had is that after all these years of training my joints tend to get inflamed when I train heavy day after day after day. Do you have any training recommendations for joint care, outside of supplementation while following Max-OT?

8/10/2007Would vibration training have any effect on anabolic hormone profiles to promote better muscle gains?

8/7/2007I know that men produce much more testosterone compared to women, but I wanted to know if males also produce more growth hormone than females?

8/5/2007Paul, I have some questions regarding the last few days before a bodybuilding competition. I know not to make a lot of changes and not to overcomplicate the process but here are my questions. Firstly, what should I do with my protein intake the last few days (i.e. leave it the same or lower it?) Secondly, is it ok to use oatmeal as my main carbohydrate source those last few days before a competition?

8/3/2007I'm confused about your product NAC 500. Can you please explain to me what is NAC and what does it do?

7/29/2007When I see people perform wide grip pull-downs, almost everyone grips the bar at the ends where it's bent at a 45 degree angle. When I do pull-downs this way it kills my shoulder and elbow. Is there another grip I can use that will work just as well?

7/28/2007With regard to glutamine supplementation, one research article (Appl Physiol Nutr Metab, 31(5): 518-29 2006) reported that it didn't affect muscle anabolism at all. The report says that the addition of glutamine had no effect on post-exercise muscle glycogen resynthesis or muscle protein synthesis, but may suppress a rise in whole-body proteolysis during the later stages of recovery. So I ask you, is glutamine supplementation really necessary? Thanks again.

7/26/2007Could you provide me with an effective strategy for taking the following supplements; VP2, Creatine HSC and Micronized Creatine, GABA, Ny-Tro PRO-40, GL3 Glutamine and Beta-X? Also, what about the days I don't train?

7/23/2007I know many people advocate different programs for different people, depending on the objectives they're trying to achieve. I want to know, is Max-OT training recommended for everyone, regardless of a person's goals? In particular, what about older populations? Also, what is your view for females (who are typically just what to get toned) as opposed to males (who are typically trying to get more muscular)?

7/21/2007I'm involved in martial arts, Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In my last session I was caught in an arm bar and tried to twist out of it. I heard a loud pop in my left arm and felt pain in the lower part of the bicep. I have a couple of questions regarding this problem. Is the muscle tear related to my age (I'm over 40) or could it be that I am missing something in my diet? Also, how should I go about rehabilitating my left arm, given that the tendon is still attached?

7/19/2007Are there any naturally occurring compounds that may inhibit the conversion of testosterone to estrogen?

7/16/2007Which type of chin-up is better to do, palms up or palms down?

7/14/2007I want to assess my fat loss accurately over the course of my Max-OT training cycle. What do you think is the best way to do this? Should I try using calipers or is there another piece of equipment?

7/12/2007I like to get warm and keep warm when I train. I workout wearing a few layers of clothes to get my body temperature up. I really think that elevating my body temperature improves the intensity of my workouts. I wanted to know if you had any thoughts on this strategy?

7/10/2007I want to speed my results from weight training. Is it possible to prevent muscle breakdown entirely so I can keep building my muscle mass? If so, how can I do this?

7/7/2007I read your answer to the question on the safety of a 50 milligram dose of DHEA for people over 50. Would this dose be effective for building muscle?

7/5/2007I have arthritis in my knees and shoulder. I'm trying to minimize my use of drugs to ease the pain and inflammation. Do you have any products that may help me do this?

7/3/2007Which exercise is better for working the biceps; using the E-Z bar or a straight bar for arm curls?

7/1/2007Hello Paul, I recently went to the doctor with back pain and was diagnosed with a bulging or herniated disc in my spine. I've been doing physical therapy and it has helped me tremendously. My question is should I perform squats right now if there is no more pain?

6/26/2007With regard to your nutrition calculator, is it just for bodybuilders only? What about for an athlete, such as a football player or maybe even a basketball player? Would the macronutrient profile be the same?

6/24/2007Your new product, Muscle XGF looks awesome! Can you tell me what it does and the best way to use this supplement?

6/22/2007 I was thinking of placing squats last on my leg day. That way I would not have to be concerned about having to perform any exercises after my squats. What do think about this strategy?

6/19/2007Should I take a dose of BETA-X before a workout?

6/17/2007The research is so compelling with regards to BETA-X but I'm not sure on the amount and proper times to take this supplement. For example, the research suggests, 3-6 grams daily of BETA-X split up throughout the day but is this with or without food? Also, should I take this supplement on the days I don't train? Thanks for all your help.

6/15/2007I need help with my strength. I play college ball and want to be ready for an NFL scout camp next year. My agility times are great but I need to gain a lot more strength. By April next year I need to show the scouts I have real strength. That is, I need to be able to bench 225 for 15-20 reps. Right now I can only do 8 reps. What's the best approach?

6/12/2007I diet like crazy but I still seem to gain a pound or two particularly around my middle by the end of the year. I've always steered clear of dairy foods due to lactose intolerance but I'm hearing more and more about a link between a dairy calcium and fat loss. Do you have some information on this you could send me? Thanks.

6/10/2007Why is it that sometimes I'm really hungry only one hour after I eat but other times I can go for 3-4 hours without feeling very hungry?

6/8/2007I heard about a 'fat vaccine'. This sounds absurd I know but it was reported on a couple of major news channels so I wanted to ask you how true is this?

6/5/2007I've read numerous articles that suggest you shouldn't stretch right before weight training as it decreases strength and your ability to exert maximum muscle force. However, all of this research has used people with little or no stretching experience. I've been stretching for years so I want to know if having experience with stretching might alter its impact on strength and force development.

6/3/2007What are considered low testosterone levels and why do testosterone levels decline with age?

5/19/2007I play football and we usually have a few beers after the game. However, after reading your answer to a previous question about alcohol, I realize that I might not be doing myself any favors regarding muscle recovery and body fat distribution. Is this correct?

5/17/2007Although I've been training consistently for nearly 5 years, after my first Max-OT workout, I was incredibly sore for days. Could you tell me why?

5/15/2007Any scientific evidence that suggests taking the herb Echinacea will speed recovery from or prevent colds and flu?
